River Nith Salmon Fishing

Salmon Fishing on the River Nith

The Nith is the largest of the Scottish Solway rivers, generally the most productive and varied of the rivers and offering excellent salmon and sea trout sport for anglers. The fishing is run by a number of estates, hotels and angling associations, much of it available to visiting anglers on a day or weekly basis. The Nith has been known in the past for some excellent sea trout fishing, with a good year not so long ago producing up to 3000 sea trout, although there has been a worrying decline in sea trout catches in recent seasons, as shown on the graph below. The Nith also regularly produced in excess of 2000 salmon, with the season, as on the Tweed, running to the end of November. In the past decade however, salmon catches, too, have been in decline.

Note:  the maps on this website are extracts from the Bartholomew “Half Inch” map series dating back to the middle of the twentieth century. There have been many changes since the maps were made, and much of the human detail, e.g. buildings and roads, will have changed over the period. It is to be hoped, however, that the unique character of our Scottish rivers, and the trout and salmon in them, will not have altered too dramatically over the years and that they may still offer the wonderful fishing prospects of days gone by. Bearing the above in mind, anyone planning a fishing or walking trip in Scotland is advised to equip themselves with a compass and the appropriate up-to-date Ordnance Survey map, the most useful for the angler probably being the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For Nithsdale, see O.S. map number 71, 78, 84.
